This is the roadside utility box at Gatlin and Dixie Belle, Orlando, FL 32812, across the the 7-11 gas station and Lake George Elementary, beside the Social Security Office. It is near Barber Park at 5301 Gatlin Ave, Orlando, 32812. It contains the wiring that controls the traffic lights. It is managed by Orange County Government...and the art box program is initiated by Orange County's Neighborhood Revitalization department. This is part of their St.Art Something program.
This is the Community Improvement Initaitive's first "art box". The surface will be prepared for painting. We have money set aside for materials but we need an artist to paint it as a volunteer. After painting it will be covered with an anti-graffiti coating. Experience shows people do not put graffiti or posters on Art Boxes that have been adorned with artwork.
Funding comes from fundraising through the Community Improvement Initiative, a Florida non-profit that improves the unity, beauty and quality of life of South and Central Orlando...we put on events and then put the proceeds back into the local community, No one is paid, and all proceeds, after expenses associated with putting on the events go right back into the community. For more information go to www.improvecommunity.org where you will see one of our recent projects.
Regarding art boxes in this area, the community met and said they would like the artwork to be concrete, not abstract, realistic, not colorful of gaudy, blending with the surroundings, and focusing on the beauty of the local animal and wildlife, and where possible, emphasizing the history of the area. This box is in Conway, which is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Orlando, and has a traditional American type of flavor and culture.
Consultations with the local community suggests the artwork should focus on cows and pastures because Barber Park used to be a cow pasture prior to becoming one of the Conway's biggest and busiest parks.
Here are some ideas as you scroll down the page..Tthese could be used as inspiration -- however, we need to make the painting original -- these photos are not original so they would have to be altered to make them clearly original or sometimes, the colors changed to make them less loud, colorful or cartoony looking -- to fit the criteria of scenic, traditional, blending in, not loud, etcetera. See the comments next to each picture...The box has four sides so you need to be creative about what goes on what side of the box...the entire box needs to be painted -- all four sides. It would be nice to have something big and concrete on each side of the box. And wouldn't it be cool for there to be something surprising on the rear of the Art box so only people who go looking there see it?
We need a picture of the artwork we will eventually put on the box -- such as a sketch, and then we have it approved by the Orange County St.Art program administrator -- then we can paint the box.
Ideas are wanted.

Ideas are wanted.
1. This concept could wok provided the background was less open and inviting for people to put graffiti or little posters...perhaps making it a rolling pasture with a little lake in it?
2. Something like this could work but it looks a bit depressing and dark -- perhaps if brightened up a bit, but not so bright it looks gaudy.
3. This captures the spirit of what we are looking for -- realistic, not really gaudy, scenic and traditional looking. The udder cold be removed though...it looks like a blight on the image...
4. This one is great. It looks realistic, although it needs some kind of background as we're afraid people will graffiti the white space around it...
5. This one could work if it was made to look a little less cartoony,,,with less contrast and less abstract. Also concerned about too much white which could look dirty...or invite posters or graffiti.
6. Same with this one -- it is a bit too colorful and needs to look a bit more realistic with less contrast,
7. This one and the next one could work if made to look a bit more realistic, but not so colorful and loud. . The Cow needs to be big and in the forefront and the udder deemphasized.
8. If somehow made a bit more scenic, perhaps looking through a fence with some scenery in the background, or a muslin/background that looks kind of scenic without actually being a pasture? It looks like the logo for a company at this point, and the Cow nameplate is not desireable. It would have to be altered to look suitable for an Art Box and given a background.
9. This is too cartoony, but could be adapted with more layers of color and a more realistic background...but we consider it kind of bland.
10. This one is similar to the one above with the same issues...also, de-emphasize the udder. Also a bit bland and you know how we feel about udders..
11. The large nature of the this illustration is good because it is very concrete and would stand out as people pass by. But it lacks realism and the scenic aspect.
12. This interesting but too pastel and note realistic enough. Too many non-cows in in it.
13. These have potential if made more realistic looking and perhaps less bright, perhaps with a rolling pasture and a fence in the background to darken it up, and more shades of color in the cows... With maybe only one or two cows so the cows face and body is prominent, rather than the distance cows which would be hard to understand as cars drive by the Art Box. Not a first choice..
The top 4 are the best, but this gives you an idea of what is wanted, and what is not wanted...
